Collagen Peptides Alleviate Exercise-induced Muscle Soreness

We’ve covered collagen quite a bit here at Summit Sports Nutrition! As an ergogenic aid, it is one of our favorite dietary supplements that has a great track record with research. We’re excited to announce the latest research trial that has, once again, shown the positive benefits of collagen supplementation for athletes.

On May 3, 2023, the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition published a randomized double-blinded crossover clinical trial. The trial, which included 20 males, displayed positive results in the use of collagen to alleviate exercise-induced muscle soreness. The results indicated that the collagen supplements had a positive effect on reducing muscle soreness and improving recovery time.

Dosages of 10g/day of collagen peptides were given to participants, who then reported significant drops in muscle soreness after the prescribed exercise. A placebo was also given out to participants to preserve the integrity and results of the trial.

The group of participants analyzed for efficacy consisted of 18 individuals with an average age of 52.6 years, while the group analyzed for safety consisted of 19 individuals with an average age of 52.8 years. The active group had significantly lower levels of muscle soreness and fatigue immediately after exercise compared to the placebo group. Additionally, two days after exercise, the active group had significantly higher muscle strength than the placebo group. The levels of CPK did not change over time, and LDH levels increased slightly but were not different between the groups. No safety issues were observed. These findings suggest that dietary CPs can reduce muscle soreness and fatigue and improve muscle strength in healthy middle-aged men after exercise.

Take a look at the full trial and results here.

Collagen peptides offer a variety of health benefits, including improved skin health, joint support, and improved digestion. Collagen peptides are known to help reduce wrinkles and improve skin elasticity, as well as reduce joint pain and inflammation. Additionally, collagen peptides can help improve digestion, as they contain amino acids that are essential for gut health. Collagen peptides can also help support healthy bones and muscles, as well as improve hair, nail, and overall body health. Furthermore, collagen peptides are known to help boost the immune system and reduce inflammation throughout the body.
